Removing skunks from a cage takes expertise. Often people call me after they caught a skunk but do not know what to do with it in the cage. They usually get sprayed in the act of trying to relocate it. Relocation of skunks in California is prohibited by law and should not be done.
Last year, I trapped a couple of skunks. The home owner tried to save money and told her boy to watch out the window to see how I removed the skunk without being sprayed. I noticed she did not call me until 3 days later. After figuring something was wrong, I asked her what had happened. She finally confessed that her 18-year old son tried to remove the cage with the skunk. He approached the skunk and while putting the cover over the cage, the skunk sprayed him directly in the face. He dropped the cage and then mustered up the courage to try it again. He picked up the cage and ran with it and it sprayed him a couple more times. By this time the house smelled like skunk since it is like a magnet to skunk spray. He went out and tried to kill it with a BB gun, but he could not kill it. Finally, after being sprayed multiple times, he was able to kill the skunk. They figured it was well worth it to pay us to remove them.
